Yamunotri place is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. This holy place is situated in western Garhwal Himalayas in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The River Yamuna is the second most holy river in India which originates at Yamunotri. The sea level in this place is above 3,293 meters. Also, Yamunotri Temple is one of four in Chota Char Dham.

How To Reach Yamunotri

 By Air

Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport for Yamunotri (210kms). This airport having daily flight services to Delhi. You can hire a Taxi and buses from Jolly Grant Airport to Hanuman Chatti from where you can start for trek to Yamunotri. From Dehradun, Helicopter service is also available to Yamunotri.

By Rail

Rishikesh and Dehradun are nearest Railway stations for Yamunotri. Two more railway stations are also available which are not far away from Yamunotri, those are Haridwar and Kotdwar.

By Road

You may also make plan to go by road. Barkot and Dehradun are the nearest road route for Yamunotri. By this road, you can reach easily to Hanuman Chatti. Also, from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, you would easily get buses for Rishikesh.

About Yamunotri Temple

As per Hindu Mythology said, The Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Sun and Twin Sister of Yama (The God of Death). As per Veda, Yamuna is called Yami. It’s also been said, whoever will take bath in the Sanctified waters of Yamuna is said to cleans from all present and past sins, Also, it will protect you from painful and untimely death.

History 

The birthplace of Yamuna is Champasar Glacier. According to the our legends, Sage Asit Muni has stayed in Yamunotri. Asit Muni was taken a daily bath in both River, in Ganga and Yamuna. Also, he performed various spiritual activities in his entire life to worship both. But during his old age, he was unbaled to go to Gangotri, so a stream of the Ganges appeared for him in Yamunotri place.

Surya Kund (The Pond of the Sun)

There are various hot water springs are appears near the Yamuna Devi Temple. This pond is dedicated to God Sun. This Surya Kund holds boiling water, where many devotees boil rice and potatoes by tying them in clothes and consider them as a “Prasad” from Goddess Yamuna.

Divya Shilla (The Divine Stone)

Near the Surya Kund, there is Reddish-Brown rock available, which been called a “Divya Shilla” As per Hindu Mythology, this Divya Shila is divine stone. This Divya Shilla needs to be worshipped before to go in the main temple of Yamuna Mother.

Janki Chatti, Yamunotri Overview

Janki Chatti is surrounded by huge mountains from all sides. This place has been located at an elevation of 2700 meters. The biggest draw from this place is the Hot Water Springs. Janki Chatti is a Unique and devotional place to perform spiritual activities.

Hanuman Chatti, Yamunotri Overview

You may reach in Hanuman Chatti from Yamunotri (13kms), Janki Chatti (8kms) and Barkot (36kms). People are Worshipping to Lord Hanuman in this temple. This place is one of the popular trekking places among travellers.

Saptarishi Kund, Yamunotri Overview

Saptarishi Kund is also one of the trek points. This place is reachable by Yamunotri by 10kms. While trekking from this place, you will meet with various exotic and glaciers on your way to Yamunotri.

Kharsali, Yamunotri Overview

Kharsali has the various religious significance as, Yamunotri is not accessible due to the heavy snowfall, the deity of Devi Yamuna bought here for worshipping (In Every year the day of Bhai Dooja in Diwali Festival). This is the winter seat of Goddess Yamuna. This temple is made by Three storied, Stones, Mortar and Wood.

Yamuna River

Another name of Yamuna river is Jamuna, which also knows as a holy river from Northern India This river has crossing three states as, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttarakhand.

Origin of the Yamuna river and Associated Legends:

The river Yamuna rises in Yamunotri Glacier. This is just below the Kalind Peak. This Kalind Peak is located in Banderpoonch in Central of Himalaya. From Kalind Kund River the Yamuna comes down into the Saptarishi Kund.

As per Hindu Mythology, after burning Ravan’s Lanka, Lord Hanuman came here to take chill water on his burning tail. That’s why this place is also known as BanderPooch.
